This lecture is focussing mainly on the clinical examination of the TMJ, muscles and occlusion.
Besides a thorough case history a treatment-oriented functional diagnostics is trying to answer the following questions:
– What kind of structural lesions do the patient have?
– Where are these lesions located?
– Are there any musculoskeletal impediments that could prevent a successful treatment.
– Why does the patients have these symptoms?
– Are there dental causes that can be eliminated?
– Clinical examination techniques to help answer these questions will be demonstrated.

Professor Emeritus e ex Head del Department of Prosthodontics and Orofacial Function presso Philipps-University Marburg, Germania (1995-pensionamento). Specialista in protesi, disturbi craniomandibolari (CMD) e dolore orofacciale con oltre 45 anni di esperienza combinata clinica, accademica e di ricerca.
Vasta esperienza clinica in diagnosi differenziale di dolore alla testa, facciale e al collo di origine dentale, trattamento conservativo di CMD e disfunzioni legate all'occlusione, e riabilitazione protesica complessa di dentature funzionalmente e parodontalmente compromesse. Ex direttore del Department of Prosthodontics presso Center for Dental Medicine presso Marburg University, dove ha stabilito protocolli di trattamento completi per pazienti CMD e protesi geriatrica.
Visiting Assistant Professor e Visiting Professor presso TMJ and Orofacial Pain Clinic presso University of California San Francisco (1990, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1996) lavorando con Professor Charles McNeill. Docente internazionale presentando estensivamente in Germania e Europa su diagnosi e terapia CMD, concetti di occlusione, protesi su impianti e pianificazione del trattamento per casi complessi. Co-editore della rivista dentale "Teamwork" e membro di giunta editoriale per multiple pubblicazioni dentali tedesche inclusi ZWR e Dental Dialogue. Membro dell'Academy for Practice and Science della German Society for Dentistry (DGZMK) dal 1990.
DMD dall'University of Göttingen, Germania (1986). Formato come tecnico dentale (1977-1980). PhD (Dr. med. dent.) con dissertazione su assiografia paraocclusale in analisi funzionale (1987, University of Göttingen). Abilitazione in diagnosi e terapia CMD (1994, University of Göttingen). Premiato con Kemptner Promotion Prize dal Working Group for Functional Diagnostics della German Society for Dentistry (DGZMK, 1987). Nominato "Qualified Specialist for Prosthodontics" dalla German Society for Prosthetic Dentistry and Dental Materials (DGZPW, 1997).
