Contemporary orthodontic practice involves the management of a significant proportion of adult patients who present with the need for an interdisciplinary approach to treatment. It is incumbent upon the orthodontist to have an understanding of various concepts as well as a working knowledge of other dental disciplines in order to best manage their treatment. This lecture will explore some of the following subjects encountered in interdisciplinary treatment
Interdisciplinary planning protocols and the difference between interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary treatment;
When is orthodontics beneficial/necessary - apart from the obvious cases;
Implant related issues preparation and timing for implants;
Forced eruption and implant site development with relation to bony deficiencies;
Missing maxillary lateral incisors the dilemma canine substitution vs restorative replacement;
Gummy smiles.
At the conclusion of the presentation participants will be familiar with:
Best practice for interdisciplinary planning;
The value of orthodontics in more subtle situations;
The role of orthodontics in the management of bony deficiencies;
The dilemma of dealing with missing lateral incisors implants vs canine substitution.
