Oltre 50 anni di esperienza accademica e clinica nei disturbi temporomandibolari e gestione del dolore orofacciale. Ha sviluppato il primo programma di Master of Science in Dolore Orofacciale negli Stati Uniti, accreditato dall'American Academy of Orofacial Pain. Il Programma di Residenza in Dolore Orofacciale è stato tra i primi accreditati dalla Commission on Dental Accreditation, laureando 65 residenti a tempo pieno provenienti da 26 paesi.
Professore e capo della Divisione di Dolore Orofacciale, membro di facoltà a tempo pieno presso l'Università del Kentucky per 45 anni. Docente internazionale avendo tenuto oltre 1.300 conferenze invitate in ogni stato degli USA e 59 paesi stranieri. Riconosciuto come "Ambasciatore Mondiale del Dolore Orofacciale" dai colleghi.

Autore del libro di testo "Gestione dei Disturbi Temporomandibolari e Occlusione" (8ª edizione), tradotto in 11 lingue e utilizzato nella maggioranza delle scuole dentali statunitensi. Editore di "Dolore Orofacciale: Linee Guida per Classificazione, Valutazione e Gestione" (AAOP), utilizzato come standard di trattamento in tutto il mondo. Oltre 240 pubblicazioni su riviste scientifiche. Ex presidente dell'American Academy of Orofacial Pain. Diplomato fondatore e due volte ex presidente dell'American Board of Orofacial Pain. Destinatario del University of Kentucky Great Teacher Award, State of Kentucky Acorn Award, International Dentist of the Year Award dall'Academy of Dentistry International, e inserito nella University of Kentucky Hall of Distinguished Alumni.
