Mobile Dental Photography (MDP): the New Era of Dental Documentation and Communication

Photography is powerful in dentistry, its numerous applications such as diagnosis, treatment planning, legal documentation, publishing and lecturing has made digital photography a standard of care in modern dental practices. Nowadays the DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras are widely used in dentistry to take high definition macro images. Recently, smartphones have come a long way in digital photography due to recent technology development; with an appropriate management of light and specific accessories, intra-oral and extra-oral photography and videography became possible in an easy way. The purpose of this lecture is to demonstrate the capacity of these devices to take high quality dental pictures. Those pictures are useful in different types of documentation and communication, in a feasible teachable and repeatable way, by everyone and for everyday practice.

With the advances in technological developments and introduction of subtractive and additive manufacturing methods, new materials are being introduced for tooth-, implant- and mucosa-borne reconstructions along with bone substitutes. While developments in the field of biomaterials influence almost all disciplines of dentistry, clinicians should be able to master the knowledge of the material types, their fundamental physical and chemical properties, as well as their biocompatibility. Efficient workflow for aesthetic composite restorations

The purpose of the lecture is to make a critical appraisal of modern materials and procedures in adhesive restorations, including dentin bonding agents, resin composites, color and aesthetics principles, the step by step procedures for direct restorations. Adhesive technologies have contributed to change the way dentists conceive aesthetic restorations. The silent revolution of dentin bonding agents has allowed practitioners to minimize their preparations: it is now possible to obtain an “invisible” restoration in terms of color, shape and surface texture. Due to the improvements of materials and techniques, dentists can restore aesthetic appeal and function with a low biological and financial cost.

Patients are aware of the new technologies, and require treatments that are highly aesthetic, minimally invasive, repairable and not too expensive. Resin composite restorations can fulfill all these requirements. However, the correct protocols have to be implemented to achieve clinical success and to obtain invisible restorations.

The multifactorial nature of TMDs, involving structural, functional, and psychosocial elements, often complicates diagnosis and management. This evidence-based lecture explores the intricate nature of TMDs, providing clinicians with a comprehensive approach to diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management. From understanding the underlying causes of TMJ disorders to implementing minimally invasive and interdisciplinary strategies, this session equips dental professionals with practical tools to address one of the most challenging areas in dental practice.

Adhesive Bridgework: the Details

In many cases, dental implants are now considered the Gold Standard for replacement of missing teeth. However, they require specialised skills for placement, extensive and expensive equipment, and multiple visits. What do you do when the patient has a missing tooth and cannot afford implants or has an adverse medical condition? Conventional bridgework offers a time-proven solution but requires preparation of teeth which in many cases is unnecessary destructive and may condemn the patient to future endodontic therapy and perhaps even future loss of the tooth. In many cases, the tooth can be replaced with adhesive bridgework in a predictable manner which is low cost in terms of finance and tooth structure. This fast-moving, evidence-based lecture shares 25-years of Jason’s experience with adhesive bridgework.

Management of Discoloured Teeth: an Ultra-conservative Approach

Teeth become discoloured for a variety of reasons: tetracycline staining, loss of vitality or after restoration with silver amalgam to name but a few. These teeth were classically treated with full coverage crowns: today this would be unnecessarily destructive. Sometimes these teeth are amenable to bleaching; however, what do we do when bleaching fails or is inappropriate.

Achieving natural esthetics in anterior composite restorations requires a delicate balance between simplicity and complexity. This lecture presents two basic approaches to direct composite restorations: monochromatic and polychromatic techniques. The polychromatic technique is the standard for complex cases — such as extensive Class IV restorations or scenarios that require intricate replication of the optical properties of enamel and dentin.

Using multiple composite shades to mimic the natural interplay of translucency and opalescence allows clinicians to achieve superior esthetic results. Still, it requires greater technical expertise and longer clinical sessions. Monochromatic composites, characterized by their single-shade simplicity, offer a practical and efficient solution for many cases, delivering esthetic results with reduced technique sensitivity and chairside time.

These composites use advanced shade-matching technologies to blend seamlessly with surrounding tooth structures, making them ideal for uncomplicated restorations. This presentation will dissect the biomechanical and optical principles underlying both techniques, provide clinical decision making frameworks for case selection, and provide evidence-based guidance on material handling and layering protocols.
